We Started in the Family Room Area

The photo above on the right is our family room.

Our basement originally had a family room, laundry room and small bedroom.

The basement was damaged from water, so the flooring had to be removed in the family room and bedroom areas.

The water damage happened just a few months before I moved in.

The photo on the right shows new built in bookcases and cabinets that we added to the family room when we remodeled it.

When I moved in we started on the upstairs main floor first then worked our way to basement doing updates and renovations throughout.

We used to come down to the basement, which was just being used for storage and laundry and spend hours sitting in antique chairs Terry had. We would discuss ideas about the basement remodel project ahead.

We tossed around lots of ideas before we made a decision on what to do with the space in the basement.

We knew the laundry area had to stay in the basement. But it needed updating.

There was a fireplace in the original family room that had to stay. It made sense to have a family room in that space. But the fireplace had to have a makeover.

We needed a home office, but did not have space for it upstairs, so we decided that the basement would also house our office.

I was concerned about it feeling to closed in and dark downstairs, so I wanted the rooms as open to each other as they could be.

During our renovations we removed a wall that we originally built between the family room and office. The wall was removed after we started the office project.

The result was much lighter, more open and a better flow for all three of the rooms in the basement.

After the finished the family room we started on the back side of the basement.

With the family room finished we were able to focus on the other spaces. We needed to update the laundry room.

We decided to do something that required alot of changes to be made in the plumbing.

We made the laundry room in the space that was originally the bedroom area.

The laundry room remodel project was very extensive, and the end result was great.

Our new Home Office is done!

Our latest room completion has been our home office. Find out more about it at the link below.

Between the time we did the laundry room remodel and the home office project we acquired some barnwood.

We decided to incorporate the barnwood into the office space. (Among other things we have planned for the barnwood).

We located the office in what used to be part of the laundry area.

The finished office has a desk and shelves and beams and wainscoting all made from recycled wormy chestnut and white oak.

Using the barnwood gave us a GREEN office. We love the look and are really enjoying our new office.

The openness of the 3 rooms makes the entire space feel much larger than it is. The basement is approx 600 square feet.

That is way to much floor space to give up, when you need to use it.

So give it some thought, go down to your basement, and see what changes you need to make.

Now I can stand at the bottom of my stairway and see all three rooms. That is much better than the closed in feeling before we started the basement remodel.

You would never know it is the same space that I saw almost 4 years ago.
